The colours of freedom at Mater Dei

Yesterday evening we paid a working visit to Mater Dei's ITU, where the Libyan war casualties are being treated.

Coming face to face with these men was deeply humbling. One has most of his body paralysed for life while another is totally paralysed except for his neck. Yet another, from what I could gather, had a small bomb explode around his neck and is still mentally disoriented.

Like most, I have been watching daily news bullettins of the Libyan war for the last 7 months. But it was still inadequate preparation for being in the same room as these men of honour. Men who fight for freedom even it means that they might not live to enjoy it.

Close to these men in the scale of nobility is Mater Dei's medical staff and nurses. They are giving of themselves way beyond the call of duty. This emergency job is a major strain on them and their families.

But on their faces you could see what is truly beautiful about this country - we care.

Anonymous - 'an oil deal for help' would not be cool at all ! The nobility of the gesture lies in the fact that it is done without asking for anything in return !
