Some independent thinking

"The quickest way to turn someone against you and your line of thought is, and always will be, trying to tell people what to think, or berating anyone for their own personal life choices.

"... a political party which has branded itself as being progressive and liberal has attacked Lou Bondi through its Sunday newspaper Kulħadd and through its deputy leader for party affairs Toni Abela, on the radio.
"This, we find to be unacceptable, given the party’s new approach and slogan of being ‘open to everyone’. How can a political party say that it is all in favour of being liberal and progressive, only to then go on and attack a person for his choice of personal beliefs?

Agreed,

However judging from the comments passed, I'm afraid Toni Abela just made use of our inherent lack of respect for each other.

What Toni Abela did was to use religion to destroy what he perceives to be a political opponent.

If I may, It's the abuse of religion that wreaks havoc on people, not the content of religion itself.

When he discredits your swearing on the cross, he also implicitly doubts your allegiance to the flag.
We all know where that leads.

We missed this, maybe because of the first reading given to it, and because most of those who wrote were too busy affirming atheism.

No one is immune to that sort of trickery. The atheist was targeted this time, simply because a crucifix was conveniently within reach.

Next time, it will be someone else, using something else.

Calling each other thick, troll, superstitious and implying mental deficiency thus one's superiority didn't really help.

It was in fact, his game.

@ JV:

Look up "internet troll", then see what Andy Farrugia wrote, and then judge for yourself.

You would think differently if you were the one continuously stalked on the internet, and your arguments are always addressed by insults and ad hominem attacks.

Now, can you please show me how Andy Farrugia's comments do not qualify him as a troll?
