John Dalli joins the Partit Laburista

DalliPL has a nice ring to it doesn't it?
My theory about politicians who unsuccessfully run for the party leadership is that they are never quite the same afterwards. The exhilarating experience of being so close to the prize during the run up and yet so far from it the instant the result is announced, marks your political soul for life.

Depending on their character and disposition, men deal with this burden differently. Guido de Marco who lost the PN leadership to Eddie Fenech Adami did so by generating as much personal glory from the offices he subsequently occupied, sometimes too much. Yet he always remained impeccably loyal to the man he lost to.

Lino Spiteri lost to Alfred Sant in shady circumstances in 1992. He then spent years nursing his bitter fate and honing a revenge strategy. Shrewdly waiting for Labour to win the 1996 election, he first accepted a top ministerial post and then struck with lethal precision. Just five months after he was appointed - when dark clouds were already looming in the distance over Sant's government - he resigned for no apparent reason. I still remember his carefully contained glee as he sat next to his flustered prime minister at the press conference announcing his departure. Spiteri then relaxed on backbench and watched the spectacle of Sant's government unraveling with even more carefully contained glee.

Fate sometimes smiles on a party leadership runner up. Finding himself at the right place at the right time, the is given the best possible palliative care soon after the blow. George Abela is one of them. He walked out of the PL headquarters in Hamrun as a loser and straight into the Presidential palace. You can still see him cracking that charmingly wry smile of his at PL party delegates.

Others, like Louis Galea - who ran for the PN leadership more out of historical necessity than ambition - are not so lucky. He had to lick his wounds all by himself. Yet when he sat for the loyalty test from hell - seeing the palliative care being handed to George Abela rather than him - he passed it with noble and stoic flying colours.

And then there is John Dalli. The runner up who never recovered, and never will. Since he lost the PN leadership race seven years ago his life has been one relentless campaign to undermine the government run by the man who won. In this case, the condition is terminal and no palliative care works. Even after the winner made him EU Commissioner with a 19,909.89/month salary plus allowances, giving him more power in Continental terms than he himself has as Malta's PM - and, incidentally, passing over Richard Cachia Caruana, one of the best minds this country has - Dalli still called his sojourn in Brussels 'a four year sentence'. The gnawing rot in the man's soul just won't go away. If anything it is getting worse.

Lacking the self-control, subtlety and shrewdness of a Lino Spiteri, John Dalli gives his game away at every turn. Now, after seven years, his bitterness has so intoxicated him that he's not even noticing how blindingly obvious he's making it. Like the dead drunk at the back of an empty bar at two o'clock in the morning, he argues with the barman that he's perfectly sober. Just take a look at this.

In a truly awful Times opinion piece on Libya (click: Libya - looking-ahead) John Dalli refers to the government as "the GonziPN propaganda machine". He also addresses a Sunday Times columnist as "an apologist of GonziPN".

It's official now. In effect, John Dalli has joined the Partit Laburista.

What about the fact that he was forced to resign due to unfounded allegation? It was the Times that reported such 'ill-practices' obviously through information obtained from 'willing' sources.

Dr. Gonzi is quoted by the ToM as saying that 'the information supplied so far had not substantiated the allegations regarding IRISL (Allegations released by the MLP). However, the facts regarding Tourist Services spoke for themselves (Allegations released by the ToM).'

I don't think that EFA ever tried to backstab Guido after the leadership race? I don't even think that Alfred Sant tried to backstab Lino Spiteri after what was alleged during the leadership race. Not even Louis Galea had to endure such a thing ...

So I think your theory might be correct in that John Dalli has held this grudge for far too long now, but unfortunately you missed one point, i.e. the real traits of Gonzi when he decided to force John Dalli to resign, making it an act more similar to that of what happens in Communist countries, where the victor forces people out rather than what happened in the case of EFA.

Your remarks on J.Dalli are all based on the wrong assumptions.
Yes,Johnny Dalli is still bitter, and he has a right to be,but not for the reasons you quote,he is not bitter because he lost to Gonzi, but he is bitter because of the false accusations he had to face, because that was the only way that they could make sure that he did not win against Gonzi.

They (Gonzi & Co) knew that they were no match for Dalli,so they came up with accusations, which were later proved to be unfounded and Gonzi was constrained to reinstate him in the Govt.
Dalli is somebody who the party can't do without, and many are eagerly awaiting his come back.

@ Anonymous, you raise a valid question. The problem is that the full story about JD's resignation has never been told. I started telling it in Bondiplus with him in the studio when the story of the allegations broke. Unfortunately, no one else followed the lead and the PBS editorial Board had prevented me from pursuing it further. At the time, the PBS editorial board was chaired by John Camilleri, a John Dalli strategist. Is the picture clearer now?

@ S.Loporto, see my comment above.

John Dalli is a sore loser with a chip on his shoulder and Salvu Balzan is his hired help doing his bidding. Period!

No, I'm sorry,it's not clearer now.

One thing I forgot to comment on,is when you said that Guido Demarco took his defeat to Eddie,in an honorable way. Of course, why shouldn't he? he did not have to combat all those false accusations hurled at J.D.it was a clear cut and hands off election. Was it the same with J.D.

@S.Loporto - If you read my previous comment carefully you should realise that I did address this point.

No doubt John Dalli is a bitter man. His uncalled behaviour in the last few years is repulsive. He is going to get worse now since he lost all the Libyan contacts that he had built over the years. The new Libyan leadership is not going to do business with people who were too close for comfort with Gaddafi family.

John Dalli should be ever grateful for Gonzi. He now has a dream job while he screwed many people with the unjust rent reform.

The following comments were posted on my facebook wall. They concern this post. My comments are in caps

Theo Vella: Igifieri qed tghid li l-PM huwa daqstant irresponsabbli li tellef lil pajjizna 'one of the best minds this country has (RCC)' sabiex jakkomoda 'dead drunk at the back of an empty bar (JD)'??? - Ma naqbilx ma diversi affarijiet li jaghmel il-PM imma qatt mhu se nemmen li huwa daqstant irresponsabbli sorry! NEMMEN LI L-PRIM MINISTRU BAQA' SA L-AHHAR JEMMEN LI JD IFIEQ. DAN MA SEHHX. IT-TIENI JIEN QATT M'GHEDT LI JD HU INKOMPETENTI F'XOGHOLU. ANZI HU BNIEDEM LI JAF JAHDEM TAJJEB. ANKI FIL-KUMMISSJONI QED JURI X'JAF. SFORTUNATAMENT, IMMA DAK LI GRALU M'GHADUX IHALLIH JARA CAR.

Daniel Calamatta: If John Dalli criticises the PN it means that he joined the PL? This kind of mentality reminds me of the labour party days when Dr Sant was leader. JD'S SIN IS NOT IN CRITICISING THE PN BUT IN UNDERMINING IT FOR NO OTHER REASON EXCEPT HIS BITTERNESS. A FORMER PN MINISTER AND AN EU COMMISSIONER DOES NOT MOCK THE MAN WHO GAVE HIM BOTH POSTS "GONZIPN".

With all due respect, the term GonziPN was coined by no other but Gonzi & the PN. The fact that it has become the target for mockery (your words Bondi, not mine) purposes is because both Gonzi and the PN did anything but live to their promises and hence people's expectations.

Please note that Louis Galea's salary is the same as John Dalli's!
