I'm not coming to dinner with you, Gianni

Gianni de Michelis
Tomorrow, Gianni de Michelis will be giving the keynote speech at an AZAD event commemorating Guido de Marco.

What a terrible idea. Gianni de Michelis was a prominent member of the corrupt Italian Socialist Party of Bettino Craxi. The latter had so many corruption charges hanging over his head during Tangentopoli that in 1994 he fled to Tunisia to escape justice. He languished there till his death in 2000.
Gianni de Michelis, Craxi's foreign minister, was not an innocent bystander. The Italian courts found him guilty on two counts of corruption, in the Veneto highway tender kickbacks case and the Enimont scandal. He was slapped with suspended jail sentences totalling two years.

Was this the right man to commemorate the memory of Guido de Marco? Is a man with corruption manacled to his wrists fit to speak about a man who gave so much of his life to eradicate it?

It is no excuse that de Michelis has since been politically rehabilitated. Italy's beauty finds its antithesis in its politics. Today it has a prime minister with multiple counts of corruption tightening the noose around his neck, who regrets having sex with only 8 of the 11 prostitutes he hired one night and who refers to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel as "an unfuckable lard-ass". These are not the standards of political correctness Malta should emulate.

I am boycotting the AZAD event. And I turned down an invitation to a private dinner with de Michelis afterwards as well. I'm kind of fond of my mobile phone.

Would an invitation to an ex christian democrat be any less corrupt?

@ Edward Fenech - if you are asking whether a corrupt christian democrat would have found my support, the answer should be obvious.

@ Edward Fenech - it seems that some people can't get themselves out of the mental rut they are stuck in... just grow up and call a spade a spade...

De Michelis in his heyday, was sleaze personified. What an abyssmal idea having him as guest speaker.

Re the Merkel comment, il gran puttaniere Berlusconi was always one to call a spade, a 'bl**dy fu*king shovel' rather then refer to it as a 'gardening tool'!

lol

@Bunny Rabbit: don't put Berlusconi and "tool" in the same sentence; people may think you are being pornographic! :-)

Come on people: it's Saturday - relax. Lou has made his point and it should be respected.
