Yesterday Lawrence Gonzi berated Joseph Muscat for eroding Malta's European credibility by delaying the parliamentary vote over the Greek bailout. The reason for the delay has been Alfred Sant's incessant stalling. If there was any doubt that the former Labour leader is still against Malta's membership in the EU and the Eurozone, the last ten days removed it.

Claiming that there was a "Labour plan" and "a hidden agenda" to embarass Malta in Europe, he made an exasperated call: "Tell us what your plan is. Tell us whether you really want Malta to pursue its EU membership and to continue being successful."

Lawrence Gonzi is right in saying that there was a plan and a hidden agenda. But it was not Labour's or Joseph Muscat's. It was Alfred Sant's. And that makes it a completely different kettle of fish.

As regular readers of this blog might have noticed, I have been getting an increasingly insistent hunch that there's more than meets the eye here. In a post on 7 October I had put it this way:  

"Mintoff never accepted anyone else running the party he created. Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici was his puppet and when Alfred Sant refused to be one,  Mintoff torpedoed his government. Could it be that Alfred Sant is now turning into his nemesis?"
