Now its Carmen's turn

Carmen Sammut seeing red
A few posts back I mused on a possible link between the late onset of hot temperatures this summer and the silly season in the media. As the scorching heat arrived late, the silly season tiptoed behind it.

Now it is Carmen Sammut's turn to give the theory a bit more credence.

She has just resigned from the Press Ethics Commission because Julia Farrugia, the editor of Illum, was found guilty of violating practically every rule in the journalist's handbook. I know for a fact that Sammut also took Farrugia's side during the Commission's proceedings.
So let me see if I get this right. Carmen Sammut, a lecturer in media, resigns in defence of a 'journalist' who uses the ethics of a hyena in the wildebeest migration season in the PBS chairman case. Yet this woman never utters a single word of criticism against the Super One newsroom which violates it's code of ethics between six and seven times a day. She should know something about that code. Because she wrote it two years ago.

And if Sammut is prepared to be so valiant about ethics, I wonder if she might clarify a niggling point. She sat on the Ethics Commission which adjudicated Julia Farrugia. At the same time she blogs for MaltaToday which is owned by MediaToday, the same company which issues Farrugia's monthly pay cheque. Conflict of interest, anyone?

A final note. As this Joan of Arc was being swallowed by flames in defence of Julia Farrugia, she uttered her last words. She is "saddened by the frenzy of attacks (sic) by some journalists against others," she said.

Oh really? Perhaps I should offer Ms Sammut a two-week internship with Bondiplus. She'll get first hand experience of what being on the receiving end of frenzied attacks is all about.

Hi Lou. The way you tried to shift the focus of this story from its main protagonist - Joe Mizzi, over to Carmen, whom you should consider to be one of your journalistic colleagues, is very cunning indeed. However, your plot remains incomplete if not non-credible because the least you could do is questioning the end result i.e. whether Joe Mizzi was in fact responsible for his actions. And if you agree with his reinstatement, why and give the real reasons for it. Perhaps you are luckier than most that you always manage to get away with a slip on the wrist when you are charged with any breach of conduct whilst in Julia's case, they tried to crucify her. And for what? For telling us the truth! I for one would have never known of Joe's adventure if it wasn't for Julia. As I pointed out in other blogs, I believe that Joe was framed and deplored the hand that was behind such bad taste. The culprit/s should be found and punished accordingly. But it is unacceptable for anyone not to acknowledge the fact that Joe swallowed the bait so naively. And this because he was drunk. Did he take the term 'flying the flag' so literally? Let us look at things from a somewhat different perspective: Let us assume that it wasn't the PN in government and the Head of PBS was not Joe Mizzi and Bondi+ was not being aired on PBS but on Net TV, what would have been the outcome if a similar story was revealed by yourself? I wonder. OK point taken. Comparisons are odious but ... lately even the masters of 'spin' are questioning 'spins'. Isn't that so Mr. Bondi?

@ Henry Mifsud - if you still think that Joe Mizzi was not set up with the disgusting and inhuman collusion of Maltese cameramen and so called 'independent journalists', you are either living in space or trying to take people for a ride. In either case, I will plug my nose and walk away.

Do you have a different interpretation to the word 'framed'?
I need not reiterate what I have already written.
It seems that not only you are plugging your nose but in doing so you are tilting your head so backwards that you are somewhat losing your vision.
Walking away only proves one point .... but I leave that to the readers to decipher!

Manuel, thanks for pointing out the mistakes.

Noted Manwel. In my humble view it is pathetic to write a whole article to criticize some odd spelling mistake here and there. I'd rather criticize substance than pettiness.

Henry: I think you missed the point, which was to magnify a niggling error and write what I would like to think is a light-hearted article.
