You are in - not at - a party, Deborah

IVA ghall-PL
That Joseph Muscat managed to get Deborah Schembri to run on his ticket is probably the best move he's made so far. The woman is smart, a good communicator and charming.

She did do things a tad too quickly. Like a scene from a John Wayne flick, she jumped from the divorce to the PL bandwagon while both were in fast motion. But that was a tactical mistake which will soon be forgotten.

Given that she comes from a staunch Nationalist family, Schembri's move is also evidence that the PN was caught napping. If, on the other hand, they did not ask her to contest because she led the Yes to Divorce movement, the PN's political crime is much worse than napping. Psychologists call it suicide instinct.

But now that the die is cast Deborah Schembri has to be judged as a Partit Laburista candidate. She is no longer heading a national cross-party movement. She is now militating in a political party whose electoral programme is being written by Karmenu Vella. Not one or two but all the Labour MPs flanking her have been led by Alfred Sant or Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. Six or seven of them were already movers and shakers in the party when Dom Mintoff was still running the show.

From first signs, it looks like Deborah Schembri wants to have it both ways - to continue to be seen as the national figure she was during the divorce campaign while she actively seeks to unseat a government.

Look at her advert above. She calls herself a "Kandidata ghall-Elezzjoni Generali". Where is the Partit Laburista logo? The slogan? Hell, where is the name of the party she's contesting with? It is no excuse to say that she did not want to mix the festa with politics. If that is what she wanted she shouldn't have referred to herself as a prospective candidate.

Schembri is currently advertising her first political activity on facebook, a pasta night. Again the PL is nowhere in sight.

Well, I told you she's smart.

Why should she include the party logo on a pasta night advert? Maybe she wants to attract people of different political opinions. I rarely see the PN logo featured anywhere, even during general election campaigns, for example. Are they afraid to show the 'maduma' prominently maybe?

@ Anonymous: you read the post to quickly: "It is no excuse to say that she did not want to mix the festa with politics. If that is what she wanted she shouldn't have referred to herself as a prospective candidate."

If I did not know Debbie I would say she is regretting what she did, but Debbie calculates everything before she acts.

She is not a team player but an individualist and she acts on impulse. Not very reassuring when circumstances demand that everyone has to pull the same rope at the same time.

Labour supporters will probably say we're nitpicking now but, personally, I feel it's in bad taste to call yourself 'Dr', even in adverts or posters.

So the character assassination begins. Never get tired of it Lou?

I do not give a monkey's about what Deborah does as I have never voted Labour and never intend to, but I was waiting for the day when you and others started to nitpick her every move and discredit her. Oh well......

@ anonymous .. Calling someone "smart, a good communicator and charming" amounts to character assasination? Could I invite you to sit on my chair for five minutes so you'll know what character assasination feels like?

Of course you are not that stupid as to go for the jugular from the word go Lou. You will first praise her for a few weeks/months and then slowly increase the dose of criticism until she is rubbished like all other PL people are.

@anonymous: I happen to respect Deborah Schembri and she has done nothing to suggest tha I decrease this respect. Does that mean that I cannot criticise what she does? Of course not. Even she would not agree with you.

Of course you can criticise Lou. I just get the feeling that the criticism is selective. This is really a nothing issue. She needs to be criticised when it really matters.
