While the first movie was all about sex and scorned lovers, for it's sequel Spielberg delves into the world of marijuana.
Chris Engerer, Cyrus' father, was arrested for possession of a small amount of marijuana. The police clipped the handcuffs on Engerer Sr's wrists just six days after Engerer Jr defected to Labour. Could it be that the PN executed a nefarious plot to punish a turncoat by setting up his father's drug bust?
Again, let's stick to the facts. John Rizzo (left), the Police Commissioner, declared that (a) he was informed of Engerer Sr's alleged drug dabbling before his son's defection (b) his informant was known to him and was not politically motivated (c) the father's drug bust took place after his son's defection only because the corps had other priorities and not for a political reason.
Consequently, for the arrest to be politically motivated, something very serious has to be assumed to have happened: that Commissioner Rizzo lied on one and probably more of the above counts. I see no reason so far to believe that he would do such a thing.
Now let us say that you wish to question the man's integrity, that John Rizzo could be a liar. Fair point. But only until it is coldly confronted with reality. Let me put it this way. Do you think that a lying Police Commissioner would be stupid enough to call a press conference and utter multiple lies while the nation's TV cameras are rolling? I don't think so.
But there's more. The seedy political jigsaw puzzle theory needs yet another key piece to even begin to start making sense. On top of believing that Rizzo uttered outright lies one also has to believe that he did so in order to help the PN take political revenge on Cyrus Engerer.
Plausible? Not quite. Even if you focus solely on Commissioner Rizzo's self-interest you could clearly see why. Put simply, would he risk flushing an entire career in the force down the toilet by lying in public, violating police procedures in full view of his staff and orchestrating a politically staged drug bust so that the PN could take revenge on a local councillor? Mmm, I don't think so.
The third and final part of Spielberg's trilogy coming soon to a theatre near you.
