To conclude the trilogy, Coppola takes over from Spielberg and moves his cast and crew to the Police HQs in Floriana and the square in front of Xara Palace in Mdina.
Facts first. Edgar Galea Curmi (left) head's the prime minister's political secretariat. As luck would have it, he's also Cyrus Engerer's godfather. Soon after his godson resigns from the PN, his godson's father, Chris, is arrested for possession of marijuana.
Cyrus Engerer then meets Galea Curmi in Mdina and tells him of his father's ordeal. It is the first time, the PM's No.1 man eventually claims, that he's heard of Engerer Sr's arrest. With his godson next to him, Edgar Galea Curmi calls the Police Commissioner. He asks him to explain to his godson's father's lawyer why his client was arrested after his son's defection even though the police were tipped off before it.
These are the facts. Now what of them? A conspiracy theory seems to be quite popular: Edgar Galea Curmi influenced the course of Engerer Sr's drug bust and did so to take revenge on Engerer Jr for defecting to the Partit Laburista.
For this theory to be true, the following sequence of events must have happened.
In true mafia-style, the PN government got Police Commissioner John Rizzo to lie, corrupt the force and stage a drug bust for political reasons. At best, Edgar the Godfather knew of these dark machinations, at worst he engineered them himself.
The blonde Godfather then meets his godson in Mdina. When the latter speaks of his father's drug bust, Edgar the Godfather feigns surprise and empathises . Within earshot of his godson, he calls the Police Commissioner and invents a sleazy charade about wanting him to call Engerer Sr's lawyer.
Immediately picking up the godfather's devilish lead down the phone line, Commissioner Rizzo plays along with the Godfather's charade, his partner in crime. Not just on the phone, but in public. Lying barefacedly, Commissioner Rizzo tells a press conference that his squeaky cleanliness prevented him from acceding to the Galea Curmi's meek request to speak to Chris Engerer's lawyer.
This is the bizarre tale that you have to believe if you think that Cyrus Engerer's father's drug bust was politically motivated. Feeling like an idiot now?

i'm a bit mixed up of what shall I do laugh or cry at your theory
F'kollox naqblu Lou, f'kollox! But no one can deny the possibility that Cyrus Engerer's defection to the PL may have precipitated the charges brought against him. X'tahseb Lou?
Could it be that the PL, understanding what burden carries their acceptance of a defector, triggered the 'leak' and the eventual domino effect? Why would the PN otherwise do it? Revenge (at the cost of public retaliation? I doubt it. Well that's my 2c worth of conspiracy theory
The crux of the story lies in whether the Police Commisioner initiated proceedings against Engerer Sr. himself or not. I believe not. The police force is made up of quite a number of policemen at different ranks all of which can influence a police action or its timing. It could have been a secretary who dug his file up and placed it on top of the bundle. It could have been someone external to the police force who triggered a revival of the case with an anonymous tip. Who knows? But it doesn't matter does it? One doesn't necessarily have to influence the highly respected Police Commisioner to manouver the police to do something, ask the bomb scarers or drug dealers who tip against each other. The charge isn't necessarily politically motivated, it wasn't necessarily triggered by the Police Commisioner, the OPM or the PN but it surely still looks like its timing was politically motivated to the common man like myself.
Edgar is very ethical, a man of integrity.
