Yo bro, gotta a hose? |
Ah, the English language. It can give you so much pleasure. But be warned. Make a mistake and it will instantly turn on you with varying degrees of viciousness.
Even putting a space in the wrong place can cause linguistic self-immolation.
The Times online is running a story on the budget. It contains the following sentence.
"Revenue from TV licences will drop to €2.5 million from €4m this year.
The licence will be abolished next year, butt hose in arrears still have
to pay up."
Detach a 't' from 'those', stick it at the end of 'but' and we leave the territory of TV licences.
In an instant, the unmerciful English language transports us to a gay leather bar in Harlem.
And the word 'arrears' takes on a completely different meaning.
